This tool looks up the registration details of a domain using RDAP, the Registration Data Access Protocol. RDAP is the modern, structured successor to the legacy WHOIS service: it returns the same kind of data over HTTPS in a consistent JSON format, with proper support for internationalised names and standardised status codes. Querying a domain returns information such as the registrar, the dates the domain was registered, last updated and expires, the domain's status flags, and the authoritative name servers.
What the registration data tells you
The dates are useful for spotting freshly registered domains, which are disproportionately used for phishing and spoofing, and for catching a domain that is close to expiry before it lapses and breaks your mail. The name-server entries confirm which DNS provider is authoritative for the zone, which matters when you are publishing SPF, DKIM and DMARC records and need to know where they will actually take effect. Status codes such as clientTransferProhibited indicate registrar locks that protect against unauthorised transfers.
Reading the result and privacy limits
Since the introduction of broad privacy rules, most personal contact details (registrant name, email and address) are redacted or replaced with a privacy-service proxy, so do not expect to see an individual's details for most domains. Registrar, dates, status and name servers remain visible because they are operational data. If a lookup returns nothing, the domain may be unregistered, or its top-level domain may not offer an RDAP endpoint, in which case classic WHOIS may still hold the record. What is the difference between RDAP and WHOIS?
RDAP is the standardised replacement for WHOIS. It serves the same registration data but over HTTPS in structured JSON, with consistent fields, internationalisation support and standardised status codes, rather than the free-text format that varied between registries under classic WHOIS.
Why can't I see the owner's name and email?
Most personal contact details are redacted or hidden behind a privacy proxy under modern data-protection rules. Operational data such as the registrar, registration and expiry dates, status flags and name servers usually remains public, but individual registrant contacts generally do not.
How does this help with email security?
The registration date helps flag newly created domains often used for phishing, the name servers confirm where your DNS records will take effect, and the expiry date warns you before a lapse breaks your mail flow. It is context for the authentication you set up elsewhere.
What do status codes like clientTransferProhibited mean?
They are registrar-level locks. clientTransferProhibited stops the domain being transferred to another registrar without first removing the lock, which protects against domain hijacking. Several such codes can apply at once.
Why did my lookup return no data?
The domain may not be registered, or its top-level domain may not publish an RDAP service. Some country-code TLDs still rely on legacy WHOIS only, so an empty RDAP result does not always mean the domain is free.
